NX-OS Features & Benefits

The Cisco® NX-OS Software operates on the Cisco MDS storage networking switches and Cisco Nexus® data center.

It is created with the Linux-based software architecture as a reference, and designed to power the most performance-demanding cloud environment. It is currently the most utilized data center operating system in the industry.

The Nexus Operating System features and benefits include:

End-to-end Visibility

Uses Media Access Control Security (MACsec) encryption to protect you from snooping and different cyber attacks. NX-OS secures workloads and endpoints with 802.1X authentication.

Your network is prevented from outages through its model-driven telemetry and plane visibility while optimizing your networks with ASIC telemetry and granular flow. You are also provided an in-depth view of both the data and control planes, allowing for more data center security and rapid issue resolution.

Flexible Architecture

NX-OS assists you with:

  • Overlaying technologies using VXLAN and segment routing
  • Efficiently maximizing network resources for multi-tenancy
  • Using VXLAN EVPN to scale your workloads
  • Continuing business operations and performing disaster recovery tasks with VXLAN multisite

Simple Operations

NX-OS speeds up the IT infrastructure setup process that usually takes days into mere minutes through its programmability.

It comes with fully integrated DevOps automation tools, easy-to-use industry-standard APIs, native docker support to streamline tooling, and completely merged Cisco DCNM that enables more comprehensive management.

Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure

NX-OS is flexible, scalable, and resilient with extensive security, management, availability, and serviceability properties. It also supports multicast features and IPv4 and IPv6 IP routing.

Users are provided a setup utility that allows them to conduct basic configuration, set system defaults, and use a Control Plane Policing (CoPP) security policy. Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) and Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) properties are enabled and disabled with the feature configuration command.

NX-OS Supported Platforms

Cisco NX-OS runs on the:

  • Cisco Nexus 2000 Series Fabric Extenders
  • Cisco MDS family of storage network switches
  • Cisco Unified Computing System™ (Cisco UCS®)
  • Cisco Nexus family of network switches (inclusive of Cisco Nexus 1000V, 2000, 4000, 5000, 7000, and MDS 9000 series switches)

The NX-OS configuration guide can be found online, along with its command reference.

IOS vs. NX-OS

The Cisco Internetwork Operating System (IOS) operates on the C programming language.

However, this faced several limitations such as the usage of shared memory space and lack of support for symmetric multiprocessing. This network is usually set up in “borderless networks” which permit access to any individual, regardless of their location and device used.

The Cisco NX-OS was originally called the Storage Area Network Operating System (SAN-OS). It offers architectural upgrades and now runs on a 64-bit operating system over the IOS and its 32-bit operating systems. It supports scripts in the Python language which can be used for Cisco Nexus switches.
